Xavier R. Gunter (known to many as Xav) was born on September 21, 1960, in Dallas, Texas, to the late Juanita A. Woods and Charles Comfort. He is preceded in death by his brothers Julius Gunter and Timothy Gunter. He leaves behind cherished memories and is survived by his loving sisters, Marilyn Smith and Cherie Woods; nieces and nephews Chandrel Gunter, Demarcus Woods, Timothy Gunter, Jasmine Smith, Quiona Dotson (Michael), Tiana Smith, and Tommilyn Tarpley—along with a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
From an early age, Xavier showed a profound love for music, often spending hours listening to a rich collection of albums by inspiring artists. He graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1979, where he was a proud and active member of the school's distinguished performance marching band. From 1976 to 1979, Xavier made history as the band's first male baton twirler, captivating audiences with his dynamic and visually striking routines. His performances incorporated a variety of elements—including multiple batons, illuminated batons, sabers, flags, and more. His artistry and showmanship left a lasting impression - each one a celebration of creativity and soul. After high school, Xavier continued his musical journey through higher education, mastering four instruments with remarkable skill. His passion and talent earned him numerous trophies, each one a testament to his dedication and talent. Known for his generous spirit, he often served as a judge for the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition and became a valued figure among band directors throughout the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). Those who knew Xavier remember his composed and reserved nature—until the conversation turned to music. In those moments, his enthusiasm lit up the room. As the eldest of five siblings, Xavier led with quiet strength and a sense of humble love. He will be remembered for his warm presence, wavering dedication to music education and the countless lives he touched through his work and craft.
