Obituary

Vickie Lynn Thompkins was born to the parentage of Weldon H. and Opal Thompkins of Dallas, Texas, on January 30, 1957. Vickie was the sixth of eight children. Vickie and her family lived on Lawrence Street in the South Dallas area.

At an early age, Vickie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Lawrence and Marder Street Church of Christ. As a child, she was very active in church and always had a special relationship with God.

Vickie attended D.I.S.D schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1975. She was very active in school, participating in track, softball and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (R.O.T.C.). After high school, she matriculated at El Centro College completing the Nursing School's EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) program.

Vickie married the love of her life, her childhood sweetheart, Bobby Bryson Burnett on December 29, 1974. They experienced a deep, unwavering love that evolved in and out of time over the span of 49 years. To this special union two beautiful children were born – Manjerrell Keeion Burnett and Tamara Hope Burnett. She was a devoted wife, an exceptional mother, caring grandmother and great-grandmother. Vickie loved and adored her family!

Vickie was employed with the Dallas Fire and Rescue Department as a paramedic where she retired after twenty years of service. Later, she started a new career with the U.S. Postal Service where she has been employed for 12 years as a Branch Manager of the Coppell and Highland Hill Stations. Vickie's character was that of a "service-oriented" person. She was a difference maker and believed in improving the lives of others and rendering service wherever needed.

Everyone who encountered Vickie knew she loved life and loved having a good time! Vickie loved to travel and explore new surroundings. She loved to shop and believed there was an art to shopping and she had mastered it! Vickie was an avid conversationalist and looked forward to her daily lively discussion on current events with her sweet mother-in-law who she affectionally referred to as, "Mama Mia."

The essence of who Vickie was will always be with us. Her engaging smile you know the kind that makes you smile when she smiles! Loving heart and her exuberant joy for all things beautiful. It's not without amazement that her favorite colors are yellow and pink because those colors represent who she was at her core; optimistic, happy, intelligent, loving, kind, sensitive and a nurturer. If you ever had the opportunity to be in her presence, it was an unforgettable experience.

On July 8th, Vickie answered God's call to join her beautiful daughter Tamara, parents Weldon and Opal Thompkins, siblings Detro Thompkins and Gwendolyn Beal whom all preceded her in death.

Vickie leaves to celebrate and cherish her memories, her husband, Bobby Bryson Burnett; son, Manjerrell "Keyo" Burnett (Shannon); granddaughters, Destiny Farrish (Kenneth), Keeiona Willis (David); grandson, Kejuan Burnett; great-granddaughter, Kali Farrish; siblings, Martha Maynard, Winfred Thompkins, Weldon Thompkins, Jr., Sandra Obaze, Pamela Grays; mother-in-law, Roberta Burnett and a large loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
