Obituary

Vera Gail Bynum- Johnson was born in Natchez, Mississippi on February 23, 1961 to the parentage of the late Sollie Fleming, Sr. and the late Lillie Bea Fleming.

Vera graduated from North Natchez High School in 1980. Vera began her journey with Windy Hills Baptist Church in Natchez, MS. In 1981, she relocated to Dallas, TX. Soon after her move, Vera joined Griggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorage of Rev. H.D. Webb. She was a faithful member and helped wherever there was a need, especially with the up-building of the church.

In the mid-1990s, Vera joined Bridge to Life Christian Fellowship Church, where her nephew, Jiles R. King, Sr., is the pastor. She continued to serve faithfully as an usher, devoted choir member, occasionally a pianist and the bossiest cook ever known to the congregation. After several years of serving at Bridge to Life, Vera went on to serve as an active member at New Legacy Community Church (formerly These Are They Community Church). Since then, she assisted and spearheaded church plays and devoted time to the Women's Ministry.

Professionally, Vera worked as a licensed nurse for over 20 years. Vera worked in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care, and rehabilitation centers. Up until her transition, Vera successfully operated VCC Continuous Care as a medical foster care provider to area veterans. Mr. Fritz and Mr. Fountain both held a very special place in Vera's  heart as she had cared for them for the last several years. Vera also valued her staff that helped care for her patients.

Vera had a heart of gold and opened her home to countless family members in need. Vera would give her last to everyone all while telling it like it "t-i-is."

Vera is survived by her spouse: Douglas M. Johnson of Desoto, TX; her two sons: Calvin J. Ford (Karla) of Rosharon, TX and Corey J. Ford (Ebone) of Glenn Heights, TX; three stepchildren: Brandon Johnson of Desoto, TX, Doug Johnson, Jr. of Dallas, TX, Shawana Perkins (Maurice Sr.) and Freda Martin, both of Allen, TX; two grandchildren: Ethan Myles Ford and Hudson Carter Ford, both of Rosharon, TX; eight step-grandchildren; five sisters: Beatrice Irving of Dallas, TX, Annie Wilson of Natchez, MS, Bertha Williams of Dallas, TX, Inez "Diane" Foxx of Vadilia, LA, and Brenda Bardere of Dallas, TX; five brothers: Eurtis Fleming of Lancaster, TX, Sollie Fleming, Jr. (Pancie) of Desoto, TX, Charles Fleming, Sr. (Tess) of Dallas, TX, Vernell Fleming (Carolyn) of Jackson, MS, and Virgil Fleming of Dallas, TX; The Bynum Family; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.

She was preceded in death by her father Sollie Fleming, Sr. and mother Lillie Bea Fleming.
