On March 20, 1943, in Rusk, Texas, a true pillar of strength and love was
born to the late Eddie Frank Matthews and Eula Mae Atkins. That child, who
would grow into a remarkable man, was Travis Matthews. He attended G.W.
Bradford Primary School and graduated from G.W. Bradford High School
in 1963, later continuing his education at Jarvis Christian College. During
his school years, he excelled in both football and basketball, showcasing his
natural talent and determination.
Travis accepted Christ and joined Mount Olive Baptist Church at an early
age, beginning a lifelong walk of faith that guided his character and values.
He learned the value of hard work early in life.
At just 15 years old, he began working, taking on a variety of tasks that
shaped his strong work ethic. After moving to Dallas, he worked for Ablon
Poultry & Egg Company before venturing into the trucking industry in 1966.
Over the years, he became a trusted and respected driver for Kentucky Fried
Chicken, Jiles Food, and Mrs. Crockett. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to
establish his own company, M&A Transportation, before eventually retiring
from Vaughn Foods in 2019 after decades of dedicated service.
Beyond his work, Travis built a life filled with love and commitment
alongside his devoted wife of 61 years, Carolyn Bennett Matthews. Together,
they created a legacy rooted in faith, family, and resilience.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Patricia Ann Matthews,
and many loved ones who now welcome him into eternal rest.
To cherish his memory, he leaves behind his beloved wife, Carolyn Matthews;
his daughter, Brigitt Matthews; his son/brother, Tennell Atkins (Marshella);
his brothers, Don Matthews (Bridget), Terry Atkins, and Ronald Atkins
(Carolyn); his granddaughters, Shetoria Matthews (Brandon) and Whitney
Matthews (Marcus); his grandsons/nephews Todd Atkins (Michelle) and
Tyler Atkins; his great-grandchildren, Marcus, Markell, Marcel, Evan,
Kennedy, Ethan, Miles, and Ella; along with a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, extended family, and friends whose lives he touched deeply.
Above all, Travis will be remembered as the epitome of a great man—loving,
protective, caring, and providing. He was the kind of husband who stood as a
steady partner, the brother and uncle who offered guidance and laughter, and
the grandfather who poured unconditional love into each generation. His
presence was a shield, his wisdom a light, and his heart a gift.
His legacy is not only in the years he lived, but in the countless ways he
uplifted those around him. He leaves behind a life well-lived and a family
forever grateful to have been blessed by his love.
