This Is My Story….
Fishing Season 1932 – 1952 : Fishing season started April 21, 1932 as the tenth of eleven children born to Melissa and William Gowans in Corsicana, Texas. He joined Mount Olive Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.
Fishing Season 1952 – 1972 : Steve earned a bachelor's degree in education from "good ole" Bishop College under the guidance of his surrogate father and Pastor, the late Rev. Dr. G. A. Hobart Shepherd and began teaching in the DISD. He was an active member of Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, choir member and soloist. In 1972, he married the woman who was always on his mind, Doris Maxine "Jack" Shepherd Gowans.
Fishing Season 1972 – 1992 : Enrolled in East Texas State University and earned a Masters in Education and continued to work as an Educator for DISD. In his leisure time he was a member of the Helping Hands CB Radio Club of Dallas. They knew him as Reno.
Fishing Season 1992 – 2023 : Steve retired at the age of 65 from DISD but stayed active as a substitute Teacher for many years after. He joined Porter Temple CME Church in 2018 and became an active member of the choir and men's chorus.
After 90 years, 10 months and 25 days, Superman traded his cape for wings and joined his loved ones in heaven. He leaves to cherish his memories: Children - Marcus DeValentino (Wanda) of Hawaii, Michelle Gowans of Dallas, Tx, Rochelle Gowans Ross of Dallas, Tx, Samantha Rokkett (Jaime) of Midlothian, Tx, Steve Gowans Jr. (Angela) of Cedar Hill, Tx, Alisha McGilbra (Bonus daughter). Grandchildren – Tevin Angelo Ross of Japan, Tavis Anthony Ross of New Mexico, Steven Gowans and Jaxson Gowans of Cedar Hill, his dog Michael Maxwell "BMichael" Gowans, his most trusted fishing buddies and a host of family and friends. Great granddaughter: Layla Paige Ross. Superman was preceded in death by his daughter LaNeil Mason and wife Doris Gowans.
