Prince Elizabeth Murphy Cooper Hill was born in Griffin (Spalding County), Georgia, on November 2, 1934 to Thomas and Corine (Turner) Murphy. She was the second of three children, with an older brother Thomas, Jr., and younger sister Ira (aka Shirley). Her parents and siblings all preceded her in death.
The Murphy family relocated from Griffin to Atlanta when the children were young. Prince attended the E.R. Carter and Davis Street schools. She graduated from Booker T. Washington in 1952 and remained an active alumnus until failing health prevented her from traveling. She continued her education at Blayton School of Accounting.
Prince accepted Christ at an early age and from childhood she and her family were active members of St. Mark AME Church.
In 1953, her adventurous, independent spirit took her to Cleveland, Ohio, where she began her career in corporate America. That's also when she became active in the Civil Rights Movement, working to help Cleveland elect its first African American mayor, Carl B. Stokes.
In 1956, Prince married the late David Cooper. To this union, three children were born: David Jr., Lisa, and Crystal (Derrick). The Cooper family worshipped at Werner United Methodist Church (now Celebration United Methodist Church) in Cleveland until August 1980.
Prince began her professional career in office administration, working for many years at the City of Cleveland's Purchasing Department and then Lake Erie Asphalt. In 1991, Prince joined Diamond Shamrock Corporation (now Maxus Energy) and subsequently relocated with them from Cleveland to Dallas in 1980. She retired from Maxus in 1987 then later rejoined the workforce as an office manager at Parkland's East Dallas Health Center. A few years later she retired again.
After settling in Dallas, Prince married Herman Hill, who preceded her in death. She joined Bethel AME Church in 1980, where she served on the trustee board and sang with the choir. On February 1, 1987, she joined Camp Wisdom United Methodist Church. A faithful member, Prince served the congregation in a variety of capacities. She was a communion steward, sang with the Voices of Camp Wisdom Choir, chaired the PPR Committee, served on the Finance Committee, and volunteered with the Clothes Closet.
Prince loved to sew and was a talented quilter. She was also a great cook and a big fan of football, cruises, Bid Whist, crossword puzzles, games of chance, and our family reunions. More than anything else, though, she loved spending time with the grandchildren she adored.
Prince went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 10, 2017. She will be lovingly remembered by her three children: David, Lisa, and Crystal; son-in-law Derrick; three grandchildren Eric, Macie, and Malia; stepdaughter Annie Rene; stepson Willie; step grandchildren Tony, Connie, Debra, and Raymond; niece Lucy (plus Cathy and Lucius); nephew Michael (and family); Godson Randall; special cousins Catherine and Virginia; and a host of other beloved family members and friends.
