Life Reflections

Dr. Mary E. Becks peacefully transitioned to eternal rest. She was born to the parents of Deacon  George and  Dovziner  Carter  Dotson  in  Shreveport,  Louisiana.  She  was baptized  at  the age of five at the New Greenwood Baptist Church. While in college, she attended Ebenezer United Methodist  Church  in  Marshall  Texas.  In  1958,  she  joined  the  Saint  Paul  United  Church  under the Pastorate of the late R.B Loud and remained a working, dedicated, outstanding, certified lay speaker until December 2015. After the death of her beloved husband Dr. Kendell on March 1, 2015 she joined the First Christian Methodist Evangelistic Church under Dr. John W. Wilson, 111. She has served and remained faithful, praising the Lord at all times until she went to be the with Lord.

She is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.  She  received  a  Bachelor  of  Science  Degree  from  Wiley  College,  and  a  Master  of  Arts Degree from Southern Methodist University. Later attended North Texas State University and was certified in the elementary school. Dr. Beck attended Texas Women's University and was certified in teaching the mentally challenged students PreK through the 12th grade. She received a Master Degree from Prairie View A&M University in Administration and Supervision.

After  retirement  in  2002,  she  attended  Vision  University  and  received  a  Doctorate  in Ministry. In 2004, she received a Doctorate in Philosophy in Leadership.

In 1957, Dr. Beck was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. through the Theta Chapter at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. She became active with Kappa Zeta Chapter in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, she became a charter member of Upsilon Nu Zeta, where she served as a parliamentarian, and has served the sisterhood in various capacities since her initiation 60 years ago, by holding the office of Vice President. She has chaired or served on the following committees: Membership, Blue Revenue, Share and Care, Finer Womanhood and Stork's Nest. Dr. Beck was elected to the National Educational Foundation Board where she served for 12 years. Dr. Beck is the first Golden Life Member in Kappa Zeta and the first in Kappa Zeta Chapter in the "Mighty Southern Region." In 1999, she received the Barbara West Carpenter Volunteerism Award presented by the Southern Region of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Dr.  Beck  established  her  commitment  to  the  community  through  her  work  in  Education with  many  organizations  and  is  the  recipient  of  numerous  commendations  and  honors.  A  fewhonors and awards include: National Teacher of the Year Award, presented by DISD, Woman of the Year Award, James A. Gates Award "excellence in Education presented by the Black Chamber of Commerce,  the  first  recipient  -  2002  Mary  McLeod  Bethune  Award,  2008  Distinguished  Educator Award. She is a Life Member, a Legacy Life Member, and a Bethune Achiever presented by the National Council of Negro Women. 48 Years Service award UNCF, and the American Red Cross Award for 40 Years of Service. Dr. Becks was also a DISD "Teacher of the Year" finalist in 2000, andreceived the "Educator of the Year" Award, presented by Paul Quinn College in 2001.

Dr. Beck was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Kendell Beck; father, Deacon George Dotson, mother,  Dovziner  Carter  Dotson,  sisters;  Bertha  M.  Dotson,  Ziner  May  Dotson  Smith,  brothers; Ernest Dotson, George Dotson Jr., Clyde Dotson, Nimrod Dotson and Kemp Dotson.

She lives to cherish her memory a sister, Marilyn Long Johnson (Reginald), two sons; Taft W. Wilson  (Aletha),  Edward  J.  Wilson  (Heneretta),  a  brother;  Sgt.  Raymond  T.  Dotson  (Linda) Shreveport,  Louisiana;  Five  grandchildren; Daiquari M. Wilson, Taft Wilson III, Edward J. Wilson Jr., Tiffany Wilson, and Rodrick Wilson.  A  lovely  God  daughter,  Jordyn  Smith.  And  eight great grandchildren.

She left behind a host of memories with nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
