Mardrie C. York was born to Marcellus and Caroline McClendon Williams on November 6, 1923, in Cuney, Texas. At 98 years old, she was the last survivor of 12 children born to this union.
Mardrie professed her love for Christ at an early age and was baptized at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Cuney, TX. She and her mother along with her other siblings moved to Tyler and then to Dallas shortly after the death of her father. She was a charter member of True Lee Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorage of the late Rev. R. L. Parish, Sr. in Dallas, Texas. Upon moving to Sacramento, California, she joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and later Allen Chapel AME Church. There she served on the Stewardess Board. While in California she met and married the Rev. James Cecil York. To this union one son was born. After living in California for 60 years, she moved back to Texas in 2010 where she joined Good Street Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas.
Mardrie has always demonstrated her love for others. She served as a caregiver for many family members and friends. She shared her love and words of wisdom with everyone. As a member of the Red Hat Society, Mardrie participated in service projects to help the homeless and other less fortunate.
A role model and trail blazer, Mardrie was an entrepreneur, the owner and lead Cosmetologist of Heights Hair Fashion. Along with other businesses, she was also a licensed Real Estate broker. Education was very important to her, and she encouraged all young children to continue their education. Mardrie received an associate's degree at American River College at the age of 70 plus.
Mardrie was an inspiration and a joy to everyone she knew. She leaves to cherish her memories, one son Marcellus York, 6 beloved step children, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
