Lea Frances Wilks was born on June 22, 1929, to the late Lee Boyd and Mattie Louise Smith, who both preceded her in death. Lea attended schools in the Dallas Independent School District and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. At an early age, Lea accepted Christ as her Savior and united with People’s Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as Youth Director and worked with the Usher Board. Later, she became a devoted member of Starlight Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued serving on the Usher Board and with the Nurses Guild.
Lea was employed by Boise Cascade, where she worked as a biscuit can inspector until her retirement. She was known for her strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to excellence. Lea had a deep love for serving the Lord and His people. She enjoyed singing, praising God, and faithfully serving in the church until her health began to decline. Her love for God, her family, and her church remained a beautiful reflection of the life she lived.
During her final days, Lea resided at High Point Nursing Facility, where she was dearly loved and cherished by the staff and caregivers. On July 1, 2026, the Angel of Death peacefully called her home. Though she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, we rejoice in knowing that she is now resting in the presence of the Lord, continuing her service as an usher in Heaven.
Lea leaves to cherish her precious memories her four children, Julius Griffin (Barbara), Lee Griffin, Leah Sharon Richard, and Stephen Wilks; her best friend of fifty years, Alice Hawkins; dear friend, Angela Hawkins; seven grandchildren, Demetria Townsend, Jillian Thompson (Jeremy), Jalesia Townsend, Dominic Griffin (Nastassja), Jacquita Perkins (Dennis), Stephen Wilks Jr., and Vander George; six great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
