Deacon John McKelon Flake was born to the loving and caring parents of Othello Hamilton Flake and Orather N. Flake, Sr. on June 15, 1959. John was the sixth of six children. John graduated from Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas and came immediately to Dallas, Texas to live with his brother-in-law and sister, Jaime and Charlotte Jackson (Hector).
John accepted Christ in his thirties, attending White's Temple in South Dallas, and then later joined Beulah Temple in West Dallas. In 2010 John retired from the City of Dallas, Water Department after 27 and ½ years. Shortly after his retirement John's health problems began. In 2012, after recovering from a massive stroke, John married Sandra J. Sanders.
John never fathered a child, but he loved his Step Son. In 2016, Mr. Flake joined the New Unity Missionary Baptist Church and became a Deacon. Throughout his life Deacon Flake stayed steadfast and praised, and worshiped the Lord with his whole heart. Deacon Flake loves the Lord even now. John would close his eyes in worship, every shut eye is not sleep, and every good-bye is not one. He was a quiet unassuming man. He was kind and generous man of God. John is preceded in death by his parents: Othello Hamilton & Orather Flake, Sr.; Sister: Marjorie Dubose; Niece: Sherrell K. Jones; Nephew: Michael L. Freeman; and 1st Wife Pauline Flake.

Flake, Jr. of Mobile, Alabama; 2 Foster Children: Cheniqua Childs, Carlton Childs, and Jennifer, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews cousins and friends.
