Obituary

John Weldon Berry, Jr. was born October 6, 1971 in Dallas, Texas to John Weldon Berry Sr. and Deralyn Gregory Berry. John who was affectionately known as "Jon Jon" was raised in Dallas where he attended The St. Mark's School of Texas, Tyler Street Christian Academy and graduated high school from Bishop Dunne Catholic School (formally Bishop Dunne High School) in 1989. In high school, John was actively involved in organizations and sports, especially football which he continued to play in college at the University of Houston.

John received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Houston where he was a member of the Cougar football team and eventually served as Co-Captain. John continued his post graduate education to receive a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.

After college, John briefly worked for the Dallas Independent School District but eventually found his calling with the Dallas Fire Rescue as a licensed Fire-fighter and Paramedic. His heart to serve others and his service was recognized by Methodist Hospital when he received the Star Award for excellent customer service and leadership. Following his service in the Dallas Fire Rescue, John began a second career in medical equipment sales. With his medical background, his gift of communication, and his ability to make even a stranger feel like family, John excelled in the sales of medical devices and was often recognized for his achievements. Professionally, he became an active member of the National Sales Network- Dallas/Fort Worth.

John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age. As a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church-Dallas and a part of the Gregory lineage, he was "raised in the church" participating in everything including usher board, choir, BTU, VBS, church picnics, etc. John cherished his many memories from St. John and his extended church family as one of the "St. John Kids… All Grown Up." In his adult life, he continued his Christian service as a member of Union Cathedral and eventually, a member of Concord Church for the past 10 years.

John was affiliated with several organizations but one of his proudest moments was when he joined his father in becoming a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1994. He was a very proud and active member of the Dallas Theta Alpha chapter and was often seen with his father at fraternity functions. He cherished his years of devotion and service to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. John was always the "life of the party" who had an infectious smile and never met a stranger. He was often seen at professional, fraternal and alumni functions or just "chillin" at the cigar lounge.

He married the love of his life, Dwala Holloway in 1996. To this union, two beautiful twin sons were born, Johnathon Weldon and Justin Charles, who were his pride and joy. John was a husband, father, brother, uncle and friend

who was devoted to his family, his church, his fraternity and his organizations where he served. Based on his family history and diagnosis of diabetes, John also became an advocate for diabetes education, especially with youth and communities of color. The life and legacy of John Weldon Berry Jr. will always be remembered in the hearts of many. His strong values and unselfish commitment to help others especially his father and his mother, whenever he was able, will never be forgotten.

Although many believe John left us too soon, we must believe that God knew it was his time and his service on earth was done when he transitioned on September 5, 2023. John is preceded in death by his father, John Weldon Berry, Sr. and grandparents, George and Zenobia Gregory. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Dwala Holloway Berry; twin sons: Johnathon Weldon Berry and Justin Charles Berry; mother, Deralyn Berry; sister, Angela Berry-Roberson (Sherman); sisters-in-law, Randa Holloway Black (Aaron) and Megan Franklin; nieces- Chloe Marie Roberson, Kayla Michelle Roberson, Carrington Sinclair Black and Channing Victoria Black in addition to several uncles/aunts and cousins of the Berry and Gregory families as well as numerous other relatives, fraternity brothers and friends.
