Joe Frank Armstrong, affectionately known as Uncle Bobo, was born on May 22, 1928, in Jasper, Tx. He was born to the parentage of Frank and Lillie Mae Armstrong, who both preceded him in death. Joe Frank received his formal education in Jasper County Schools.
Joe Frank served in the Army during the Korean War on the Regimental Combat Team. He enlisted in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. For his service, he earned several badges and medals, including a Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, a Bronze Service Star, and a Combat Infantry Badge.
While growing up in Jasper, Joe Frank accepted Christ at an early age while he was a member at More School House Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, which was later named Armstrong CME Church. When he arrived in Dallas, he joined and was a devoted member at Kirkwood Temple CME. During his membership at Kirkwood, he was an usher, and even worked and volunteered for various church ministries. His membership at Kirkwood spanned over 60 years. When worshiping, Joe Frank could be heard singing as loud as the choir, reciting bible verses, and shouting a hearty, "Alright!" During his membership, Brother Armstrong was presented with a 50+ Years of Dedicated Service Award in 2011 and in 2015, he was awarded the L. B. Green Award for exemplifying the TRUE SPIRIT OF CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP, both awarded by Dr. Jerry L. Christian.
In 1964, Joe Frank moved to Dallas to join his family. Upon his arrival, he became employed at Austin Industries from until his retirement in 1986. Joe Frank was a dedicated employee and served his company faithfully.
In 1968, Joe Frank united with the love of his life, Johnnie Mae White. Although they did not have any children of their own, they helped to raise several children in the Armstrong family. He provided guidance, support, and most importantly love to those closest to him. Some of the children who Uncle Bobo helped to nurture and raise include Cora Mae, Ernest LaNell (Nellie), Jackie, Shawn, Savontra, Shuntrice, Rayshan, and his favorite boy, Casey.
Uncle Bobo loved watching MSNBC and could tell you anything you wanted to know about politics. He was always ready for a good political conversation and didn't shy away from his political opinions. Uncle Bobo was a Miami Dolphins fan. He also enjoyed watching Perry Mason, Matlock, In the Heat of the Night and recording gospel songs on his many vintage tape recorders. So that he was always prepared, he kept an ample supply of cassette tapes and double D batteries. If you know, you know.
Joe Frank was preceded in death by his wife (Johnnie Mae), parents (Frank and Lillie Mae), four brothers (Claudie, Carl Anderson, L.J., George), three sisters (Ernestine, Maxine, and Bernice), and a special niece, Cora Mae.
Those who are left to cherish his memories include: Casey Lewis Bronson (special nephew, care-giver, and best friend), Savontra (great-niece) and Brandon Everett, Frankie Mae Diggles (sister), Jack Armstrong (brother), Ernest LaNell and Jackie Bronson (nieces), Shawn Bronson (nephew), Shuntrice (Carl), Rayshan and KeJauna (great-nieces), Shakia, Aspen, Alexia (Shawty), Kialond and Khayla (great-great nieces), Jada, Alexandria and Hayden (great-great-great nieces), Demetrias Bronson- Ollie (great-niece and hospital regulator), Polo (his doggie companion), and a host of other family and friends.
