Joan Etta
Harrison
January 9, 1939 – September 30, 2025
Joan Etta Harrison was born on January 9, 1939, in Dallas, Texas, to the loving parents, George W. Moore and Lorine L. (Jackson) Moore.
She was educated in the Dallas Public Schools and proudly graduated from Lincoln High School, Class of 1957. On December 18, 1965, Joan was united in marriage to the late Walter Harrison, Jr. Together, they shared a beautiful union and lovingly raised three wonderful children.
Joan's life was one of faith, family, and service. She worked tirelessly in her church, St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Garland, Texas, where she served as a deaconess and a devoted member of the choir and women's ministry. As her health declined, it became difficult for her to attend services at St. Luke A.M.E.; however, her faith and dedication never wavered—she continued to support and attend Southwest Bible Fellowship whenever she was able.
As a homemaker, Joan was the heart of her home, always ready to host family and friends, share laughter, and prepare her famous meals that brought everyone together. As a mother, she was loving, caring, and deeply devoted. Her children and family were her greatest joy and part of her life's purpose.
In her professional life, Joan worked for many years at Sanger-Harris (later known as Foley's and Macy's), Neiman Marcus, and the Dallas Independent School District. She was known for her strong work ethic, kindness, and grace in every role she held.
Joan found great comfort and strength in her faith. Her favorite scripture, Psalm 23, was one she recited every morning before her daily prayer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Harrison, Jr.; her parents, George W. Moore and Lorine L. Moore; and her brothers, Ormond Moore and Carl F. Moore, Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Anthony Harrison (Sharlonda) of Lancaster, TX; her daughters, Oletha Smith (Carlton) of Cedar Hill, TX, and Deborah McKinney of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Kendal Smith (Erykah) of Frisco, TX, Latrissa Jacobs (Charles) of Cedar Hill, TX, Breanna Harrison of Grand Prairie, TX, and Kyra Harrison of Lancaster, TX; two great-grandsons, Wendell Day and Amari Jacobs, both of Cedar Hill, TX; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who loved her dearly.
Joan's light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
