MY STORY:

Jean Yvonne McNair

July 7, 1936 – June 26, 2026

With grateful hearts and cherished memories, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Jean Yvonne McNair, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mentor, and friend whose love, strength, and generosity shaped generations.

Jean was born on July 7, 1936, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the late Dorothy Foy and William T. Lamb. During the Great Migration, her family moved north in 1938, settling in the vibrant Harlem community of New York City. She was lovingly raised alongside her family and grandparents on 118th Street, where she experienced the rich culture, close-knit neighborhoods, and enduring family bonds that would influence her throughout her life.

Jean attended school in Harlem before later moving to Queens, where she attended P.S. 140 and graduated from Jamaica Vocational High School for Girls. There she discovered her remarkable talents in fashion design and sewing, creating beautiful garments of exceptional quality for herself and her family. Others often said the clothing she made surpassed anything available in stores.

Determined to continue learning, Jean completed secretarial training through the Manpower Program. She began her professional career with American Airlines as a secretary, where her intelligence, dedication, and leadership quickly earned her promotions into Purchasing. Through hard work and perseverance, she rose to the position of Commodity Manager, completing an outstanding career marked by 25 years of honorable service before retiring in 1995.

Her career also opened the door to one of her greatest joys—travel. Through the American Airlines Interline Club, Jean explored the world, visiting Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, England, Canada, Bermuda, numerous U.S. territories, and many destinations throughout the United States. She treasured every journey and embraced each new culture with curiosity and enthusiasm.

In 1979, Jean transferred with American Airlines to Irving, Texas, where she established a new home while continuing to build a life centered on family, education, and service.

Although she enjoyed a successful professional career, Jean never stopped pursuing her own dreams. She had always aspired to be a dancer and continued dancing throughout her life. Her love of movement, music, and joy never faded. In fact, she celebrated her 89th birthday by roller skating, demonstrating the youthful spirit and determination that inspired everyone who knew her.

Jean firmly believed that education opened doors. While working full-time and raising her family, she continued her education at North Lake College before earning a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration from Dallas Baptist University in 1990—an achievement that reflected her lifelong commitment to personal growth and excellence.

Retirement was anything but ordinary. Jean immersed herself in hobbies she loved, including antiquing, bowling, skating, and operating her own LegalShield business. Yet her greatest investment was always her family.

She devoted countless hours to raising and nurturing her grandchildren. She faithfully picked them up from school and daycare, took them to museums, dance classes, art lessons, drama performances, soccer, basketball and football games, band and orchestra concerts, and dance recitals. She was present for every milestone, every celebration, and every opportunity to encourage their dreams. She believed in investing in her children's interests and ensuring they had every opportunity to succeed.

Her children lovingly say:

"We could not have lived the lives we are living without our mother."

Family was everything to Jean. Whether traveling, attending reunions, or simply piling everyone into the family car, there was always room for another relative. As her family fondly recalls, the car never left 116th Avenue without extended family members along for the ride. She loved bringing people together, creating lifelong memories filled with laughter, music, and unconditional love.

Among Jean's greatest legacies was her extraordinary passion for genealogy. Long before online research became commonplace, she spent countless hours studying census records on microfiche in libraries. Later, she continued her research from her home computer, carefully documenting her family's history and tracing their ancestry back to 1810, preserving nine generations for future descendants. Because of her dedication, countless family members now know the stories and heritage of those who came before them.

Jean leaves behind a legacy of faith, resilience, excellence, generosity, and unconditional love.

She is lovingly survived by her children: Linda Burnett (Fred), Jenell Tomlinson (James), Karen McNair, and Wayne McNair (Peronica); her sisters, Carolyn Mayo (James) and Patricia Reid (Norman); her brother/son, Gregory Spence; her beloved aunt/sister, Maxine Foy; her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and unwavering support.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Foy and William T. Lamb, and her beloved brother, Walter K. Spence.

Jean's life was a beautiful testimony of perseverance, grace, compassion, and unconditional love. She taught us that hard work creates opportunity, that education never ends, that family is life's greatest treasure, and that love is best expressed through faithful presence and selfless service.

Though she is no longer with us in body, the lessons she taught, the memories she created, and the love she freely gave will continue to guide her family for generations to come.

Her legacy lives on in every life she touched, every dream she encouraged, and every family story she carefully preserved.

"Her children arise and call her blessed." — Proverbs 31:28
