Life Reflections

Bettye Jean Dowdell, affectionately known to most as "Jean,"
was born on July 2, 1944, in Wilson, North Carolina, to Walter
Lee Joyner, fondly known as "Pete," and Mary Arnethia Barnes
Joyner.

She attended Charles H. Darden High School and, later in
life, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Clothing and Textiles,
graduating cum laude from Framingham State University.

Jean grew up in North Carolina until she moved to New York
with her former husband, Toy Dowdell Jr. From this union, two
daughters were born: Toyette and Tarika Dowdell. The family
later moved to Massachusetts, where Jean became a member
of Belmont Street AME Church. There, she led Children's Bible
Study and was actively involved in the Women's Mission Ministry.

In 2002 after earning her degree, Jean relocated to Texas to help
raise her cherished grandchildren, Sierra and Andre'. She joined
St. John Missionary Baptist Church, now known as St. John
Church Unleashed, where she became an engaged and faithful
member. Over the years, she participated in several ministries
including the Hope Center, "Senior Saints" Generations, and
Senior Women of Faith.

Jean had a lifelong love of sewing, which began in her early teen
years. She lovingly clothed her family and many friends with her
talent. She also had an extraordinary passion for helping others.
Her family playfully diagnosed her with "OHD" — Obsessive Help
Disorder — because she was always offering her time, talents, and
energy to assist those in need. Being of service brought her true
joy.

Jean passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 23,
2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Lee "Pete"
and Mary Joyner, her brother Albert Joyner, and her sisters Anita
Williams and Doris Tompkins, with whom she is now reunited.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Toyette and Tarika,
grandchildren Sierra and Andre', sister Mary Pender of Charleston,
SC, former husband Toy Dowdell Jr. (Marjorie) of Richmond,
VA, and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces,
grand-nephews, and dear friends. Also remembering her with
love are her cherished four-legged grandchildren, Roscoe and
Pepper.

Jean will be remembered for her deep faith and devotion to God
