James John Matthews Jr. was born on November 10, 1946, in Longview, Texas, to Clifford Thelma and James Matthews. He graduated from Womack High School in 1964. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1964 and, following an honorable discharge, married Celesstene Johnson in 1972. Their union was blessed with three children: Kendra, Tinna, and Marlon. In 1989, he founded his own company, Brass Builders, and has been remodeling homes ever since.

James found God at an early age. He was a faithful member of Southern Crest Full Gospel Baptist Church for over 35 years. He served on the Deacon board, the Outreach Ministry, and numerous other ministries, always willing to help wherever and however he was needed. He was a dedicated servant of God who loved praising the Lord and cracking jokes. James truly loved people and embraced everyone he came in contact with.

James Matthews Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Thelma and James Matthews Sr.; his sisters, Thelma Scales and Charletta Matthews Gallien; his aunt, Dorothy Simpson; daughter, Kendra Matthews—Freeman; wife, Celesstene Johnson—Matthews; and great-grandson, Mason Strange.

He leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Patricia Matthews-Clifton, and brother, Joe Matthews (Denice). His daughter,Tinna Matthews-Brooks (Marvin), and son, Marlon Matthews. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Ja'Broderick Morris, Essence Strange, Kiara and Kamren
Freeman, and Caleb Matthews, along with great-grandson Amir Morris. Special grandkids include Dominique Cade, Christian Portley, Davion
Atkins, Jasiah (Baby Red), A'Zriel (Sweet Pea), Mia, and Kaylen (Buddy), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
