Obituary

James D Brown, Jr., 73, entered into eternal peace on August 17, 2018 at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, TX. He was born December 12, 1944 in Dallas, TX as the eldest of eight children to the late James D Brown, Sr. and Dorothy Brown Scott.

Leadership began early for James. Not only did he help his parents provide for and take care of his brothers and sisters, he proved a servant leader in Highschool as well. James was voted President for both the Lincoln High School graduating class of 1963 and the entire student body. In addition, he was the Colonel of the NDCC (National Defense Cadet Corps), better known today as the ROTC (Reserved Officers Training Corps).

Acceptance of Christ at an early age naturally led to a life of servant hood beginning at Bexar Street Baptist Church and continuing at Mt Horeb Baptist Church where, in 1964, he married his high school sweetheart Earlene Blanchard. Two daughters, Stacye and Lisa were born to this union.

His pastor, Bishop Bradford III jokingly says "James is the front door of the church, because he's always there…" dutifully and faithfully serving in any way he could. There was no position to lowly for him to perform; he simply, and humbly did, whatever he was asked to do. During his membership at Mt Horeb, James served as an Usher, a member of the Male Chorus and on the Finance Committee. He was a Deacon and he played an intricate role in maintaining the facilities. James also was a Sunday school worker, was on the Board of Directors and helped to oversee various projects.

To know James, was to know him as an unselfish "giver", he sought the opportunity of being inconvenienced if he knew it would make someone else happy. Being a servant of people was truly his life's destiny.

His young peers thought of him as "Most Likely to Succeed"…. 20 years later, the Dallas Morning News featured James in an article claiming that statement to be true. And after 51 years of dedicated service to the United States Postal Service where he achieved numerous accolades and letters of commendation, he retired nearly three years ago as a Dispute Resolution Specialist.

James is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Gurtha Jackson and Mary Phillips. He leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Earlene; children, Stacye Bowers (Bobby) and Lisa Williams (Darryll); five siblings, Manuel Brown (Lena), Charles Brown, Doris Jeffery (Joe), Deborah McMillan (Noel) and Shirley Gates (Jerry); four grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
