Obituary

Irene Mack Gilbert, a beloved matriarch, community cornerstone, and embodiment of resilience, passed away enveloped in love and family.
Born on March 13, 1934, in Two Egg, Florida, Irene's early years in the core of the Panhandle's farming community laid the groundwork for a life defined by hard work, determination, and a profound dedication to family. Growing up alongside seven siblings, Irene became familiar with the rigors of farm life, contributing to the family's production of cotton, peanuts, and tobacco. The ethos of her upbringing meant that school often took secondary importance to the seasonal requirements of sowing and reaping, instilling a steadfast work ethic and a deep respect for the land.
During her teenage years, Irene's adventurous spirit guided her to Tampa, Florida, where she visited her father and remained for six months. This trip initiated a series of courageous moves that would shape her life. Eventually settling in Panama City, Florida, she welcomed three children. Aiming for a brighter future, Irene relocated to Xenia, Ohio, temporarily entrusting her children to her grandmother's care while she pave the way for a better life. In Ohio, Irene met and married Paul Gilbert, and together, they expanded their family with two more children, Paul Jr. and Goldie. Irene's unwavering dedication to her family led her to join her three oldest children with their new family in Ohio. She secured employment with the James Chew family, owners of the Xenia Daily Gazette and one of Xenia's wealthiest families, working as their Household Manager. Irene was accountable for numerous tasks in this role, effectively becoming the backbone of the household's daily operations.

Irene took that service spirit into the Church and loyally served at United AME for over 40 years. As she was an exceptional cook, events often were organized for her to cook as a fundraiser. If Irene was cooking, it was guaranteed to be a sell-out. Her culinary skills frequently drew her children's friends "conveniently around dinner time". She always had extras. Her straightforward approach to life facilitated clear understanding. Her mission was to raise her children well. Irene's professional journey comprised significant years of service at Kettering Hospital, where her commitment was recognized. Even at an advanced age, she remained committed to caring for the elderly, highlighting her limitless compassion and empathy. Reflecting her years of service, the actress Melba Moore presented her with an Award of Merit. A hardworking individual, Irene found joy and comfort in gardening. Her endeavors to create visual representations of God's beauty through her home and church landscapes brought happiness to everyone who passed by. Irene's flowers and gardens were a symbol of beauty and a manifestation of her love for nurturing life.

In 2010, due to Paul's health issues, Irene and Paul relocated to Dallas to be closer to her daughters, who were ready to extend their support. Initially, they resided with her grandson, Arami Gates, Myra's son. After Paul's demise, Irene moved in with her daughter Myra, who became her primary caregiver. This setup lasted until Irene's health required more thorough care. At that juncture, Goldie stepped in to manage the shift to a care facility, ensuring Irene received the necessary support. Throughout these changes, surrounded by her loving family — children grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren — Irene's legacy of love, resilience, and unyielding spirit radiated brightly, reflecting her extraordinary life and the significant impact on all who knew her.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Paul Gilbert, Irene leaves behind a legacy that will forever be treasured by her family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know her. As we commemorate Irene Gilbert, we celebrate a life fully lived, characterized byun wavering commitment to family, community, and the simple yet profound joys of life.
