At an early age, under the watchful care of loving parents, Hyra accepted Jesus as her Savior and became a member of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Big Sandy, Texas. After relocating to Dallas, as a young adult, she became a member of the choir, Sunday School teacher and Garden Club member. She embraced the three angels message of Revelation 14, and in 1957, under the pastorate of Jeter Cox, became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Hyra served faithfully as Chairman of the School Board, Chancel Choir member, MV Leader for the Youth, Sabbath School Teacher, Choir Director and Deaconess.
Hyra believed and supported her church through Ingathering and the selling of the Message Magazine. She loved working with children. Her favorite community outreach was Vacation Bible School and Branch Sabbath School leader. She would create community programs for the children to come to her home and learn about Jesus and his love. Every class she had, she taught about the "good ground," the "stoney ground" and the "thorny ground Christian, as well as the story of creation. She was also a playwright and wrote a gospel play entitled "This Gospel Train," which was performed in various area churches.
Hyra, lovingly called "Moms" to many, married Willie E. Brown in 1955, whom she affectionately referred to as "Bill." She is survived by her son, Adolphus. Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren, Melody, Violet, Mickey, Bud, Valarie, Tony, Angie, Evonne, Tiffany and Nikki; her great-grandchildren, Mia, Chloe, Jessica, Max, J'Naya, Jonathan, Jeremy, Jonah, Deserea, Dejeah, Dakota, Devan, Aydan, Xian and Xia; and her great-grandchildren, Legend and Logan. Also, she is survived by her first cousins, Margaret Rose Hamilton and Hosie Stephens. She will be cherished by family and friends.
Hyra remained a strong believer in the second coming of Christ. She will be missed by ALL!
The homegoing celebration will commence on Friday, February 1, 2013 11:00AM at City Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church.
