Obituary

Dr. Hubert Freeman, a general dentist who began practicing in Dallas, Texas in 1975, died at his home in DeSoto, Texas on Saturday, June 17, 2023. He attended O.J. Thomas High School in Cameron, Texas where he was born and raised, and Huston-Tillotson (College) University in Austin, Texas. After graduation from college with a B.S. in Biology, Dr. Freeman served as a ranger in Yosemite National Park before enlisting in the U. S. Army as a security specialist. He was introduced to dentistry during a tour of duty in Sinop, Turkey when a soldier with knowledge of human biology was needed to assist the medic and a dentist on base. After returning from Turkey, Dr. Freeman completed his military service in 1968 at Two Rock Ranch Station in Petaluma, California and received an honorable discharge. With a continuing interest in dental school, Dr. Freeman began preparing for the DAT Dental (School) Admission Test while working for the US Department of Fish & Wildlife Service as a fishery biologist.

In 1970, Dr. Freeman was admitted to dental school at Meharry Medical College of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee and in 1974 graduated with a D.D.S. degree. After completing a postdoctoral dentistry internship program at Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Freeman moved to Dallas and briefly joined the dental practice of Dr. Foster Kidd. Dr. Freeman opened his independent practice in 1968 and provided dental services to patients until his death.

When he was not in his office, you could find Dr. Freeman pursuing his passion on one of the many golf courses around Dallas. He began playing golf while in the military and after a game would often remark, "I hit like Tiger today," referring to Tiger Woods' golf swing. Dr. Freeman's other passion was the Dallas Cowboys. He started each season by saying, "They look good, I believe this is the year the Cowboys will win the Super Bowl. "

Dr. Freeman is survived by son, Hubert Jr. (Whitney); daughter, Amy Freeman (Jerwin); sister, Myrtle "Lean" Freeman Ward; sister Michelle (Judge) Hall; sister Deborah Freeman; sister-in-law, Murna E. Freeman and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, golfing buddies, patients, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brothers, office staff, and friends.

In lieu of Flowers, donations may be sent in Dr. Freeman's name to Huston-Tillotson University, Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, 900 Chicon Street, Austin, Texas 78702-2795 or Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, Office of Development, 1005 Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Blvd. Nashville, Tennessee 37208.
