His Story
Born April 19,1927 to Lucinda and Willie Hogues in Navasota ,Texas. Homer accepted Christ at a young age. Upon a move to Dallas area, Homer attended schools and graduated in Waxahachie, Texas.
Homer later married Mattie Bell Robinson in 1947 and to this union were birthed two daughters, Mary Helen and Barbara Ann Hogues.
Homer joined the US experiential military group of Black enlisted Americans: the Tuskegee Airmen as a mechanic -support personnel. He Remained in the Airmen group attaining the rank, of Staff Sergeant. SSGT Hogues .
After returning home, Homer lived in Ovilla, Texas and later moved to Dallas. The family moved again in 1958 to the home where he and Mattie lived until their death.
Homer became an electro- plater for Lane's Plating Works from which he retired after 47 years. He served the File Mile and Highland Hills Community in various aspects.
Before becoming and active member of the DFW Tuskegee group, He served as Senior Pastor for the Ovilla Baptist Church in Ovilla Texas; a member of the Carver Heights Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas where he was a faithful minister; loved and appreciated especially with the youth ministry as chief mechanic and bus driver for Summer youth trips.
Later he united with Antioch Fellowship Baptist Church where he remained a member until death.
At age 80, he joined the DFW, Claude Platt Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen and received his recognition as an 'Original Documented Tuskegee Airmen. He, his wife and daughter, Barbara were active participants of efforts recognizing and stimulating National awareness, especially to youth in branches of the military and the Air Force.
Homer was soft spoken and kindhearted and loved by many. He spent a brief time in a nursing home but was blessed to return home with the assistance of various community and military groups. He remained home with care for he and his wife of very special "God sent "home health care aides.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a host of relatives, including his younger brother, Leroy Hogues of Houston and as of June 25, 2023 , his wife Mattie.
He leaves to mourn his daughters, Mary Helen Barber(Willie), Barbara Ann Hogues, Sandra Thomas (Willie); God-Son, Colonel Earnest Lloyd(Erika); sisters, Mattie Neal and Marilyn Hogues; brother, Marvin Hogues.
He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Tiffany Hogues, Brijin Barnes, Weldon Barber (Alissa), Winston Barber, Brooke Rivers(Taylor), Matthew Lloyd, Malcolm Lloyd,
Great grandchildren: Payton Barnes, Daryl Harris, Derek Harris, Christian Barnes, Kaleb Barber, Destini Hogan, Logan Barber, Tristan Barber, Andromeda Barber, Aurora Barber, Artemis Barber Ariadna Barber ,Teagan Rivers , Maurice Lloyd and Amir Lloyd and a host of nieces, nephews, adopted children and friends.
