Helen Louise
Jackson
December 20, 1928 – February 7, 2019
A TIME TO BE BORN… Dr. Helen Jackson was the youngest of five children born to Jesse and Ellla Mae Fisher in Hubbard, Texas on December 20, 1928. They have all preceded her in death.
A TIME TO BUILD… Dr. Jackson graduated from Dawson High School as valedictorian of her class. She relocated to Dallas, Texas where she met and married Fred Norman Jackson. He preceded her in death. Nine children were born to that union. Giving their children what she had been given as a child, a love for God, and a love for learning, she filled their home with maps, books, records and videos. She taught her children about the world and it's people through two sets of books that were household staples, The World Book Encyclopedia and The Childcraft How and Why library. She believed "you can never have too much knowledge, and you can never be overdressed."
A TIME TO PLANT… She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Paul Quinn College. Her working years were spent as an educator for the Dallas Independent School district having served eight schools throughout her career. Her awards during those years included several for outstanding service and dedication to students including the prestigious Mabel Chandler Educators Award .
A TIME TO EMBRACE… An eager participant in all that her children pursued, she served as homeroom mom, PTA president, ROTC parent, Girl Scout mother, Dance mom, Band mother, Math club mother, Drill Team Booster Club mother, Soccer mom, Spanish club mother, French club mother, Sunday School mother, Theater mom…..on and on. A constant comment from our friends was "your mom comes to everything!" A full-time cheerleader for eight children, now that's a job.
A TIME TO BUILD… . Dr. Jackson has been the recipient of: The Women of Valor, International Medal of Honor, Elite News Women of Distinction, Parent of the Year-Universal Peace Federation, Lifeway member of the year, Women's Federation for World Peace-Living Legend Award, Ambassador for Peace- American Clergy Leadership Conference. Even in retirement she served as a volunteer and mentor for the City of DeSoto library; and named as an Ambassador for the city. She founded and funded a library in her hometown of Hubbard, Texas. The grateful community later named it in her honor.
A lifelong student, she returned to school and earned a Doctorate of Theology at age seventy-five.
A TIME TO LOVE… Her children arise and call her blessed Proverbs 31:28. Her sons, Dr. Micheal Jackson (Joyce), Byron Jackson (Gwen); daughters Dr. Re'Donna Toliver, Dr. Karen Hollie-Thibodeaux (Bishop David), Dr. Astra Sparks (Dr. Christopher), Dr. Helena Mosely, Brandi Oppenhammer (Johnny). Jesse Jackson, Fredna Jackson and Elena Tilley all preceded her in death. Her legacy continues with fourteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. "Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate" Proverbs 31:31.
A TIME TO DIE… Toward the end of her life, her words and deeds were in alignment with her favorite scripture, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." On February 7, 2019, God transitioned her from time to eternity.
"And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God" Ecclesiastes 3:1
