Gussie Lee Freeman
FAITH, FAMILY, AND LEGACY
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Great-Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend, Gussie Lee Freeman entered her eternal rest on Friday, October 31, 2025, surrounded by love and held by the promises of her faith. Standing just 4'9" in height, Gussie was a giant in every way that mattered — fearless, respected, and unyielding in truth. Her spirit filled every room she entered, and her words carried weight, conviction, and often a lesson. Though small in stature, she was mighty in presence.
Born on April 1, 1937, in the modest, close-knit town of Mexia, Texas, Gussie was gifted to her parents, James and Drucella ("Druecellar "/"Drussilla") A. Kirven. The youngest of 15 children, she experienced profound loss early in life when her mother passed away during her childhood. Her older sister, Laura Lee Kirven, stepped into a caretaker role, forging an unbreakable bond of sisterhood that became friendship and lifelong support. This tender relationship nurtured a compassion in Gussie that would flow through generations.
As she grew into adulthood, Gussie moved to Terrell, Texas, where she met and married Melvin Freeman, Sr. Their union was blessed with seven children, each raised with prayer, discipline, laughter, and strong values.
A woman of deep and demonstrative faith, Gussie's relationship with God was the foundation of her life. Her prayer life anchored her home and covered her family like a protective blanket. She believed earnestly that God's guidance was the greatest inheritance she could pass on. Her devotion to the Lighthouse Church of God in Christ, her Bible, and her Savior never wavered. If you needed prayer — she was already on her knees. If you needed truth — she spoke it without hesitation.
Gussie was bold, unafraid to speak her mind, and unapologetically honest. Her courage taught those around her that truth is a form of love. Even so, her words were laced with wisdom, humor, and a deep well of care. She protected what mattered, loved fiercely, and left no doubt about what she believed. Generations rose under her covering, learned from her example, and are better because she lived.
Gussie is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Melvin Lee Freeman, Sr.; children Febbie Barnes and Melvin Lee Freeman, Jr.; siblings James Edward "BoBo'', Moses, William, Joe, Arthur, James "June", John, Aldessie, Elizabeth, Ella Mae, Hazel, Lil Gal, Alice, Laura Lee and great-great granddaughter Symphony.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons Larry Donnell Freeman (Jacqueline) and Cedric Allen Freeman; daughters Brenda Joyce Wyatt (Russell), Rita Joyce McQueen (Allen), and Tonya Beauneek Dashion Freeman-Morris; (23) grandchildren, (40) great-grandchildren, (18) great-great-grandchildren; Special Cousin: Sis. Mayberry; Special Friends: Sis. Oliver, Sis. Allen, Sis. Pratt, Sis. Burns, Sis. Williams and Ken and Andrea Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, church family and friends.
Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in the remarkable legacy she leaves behind — one woven with faith, anchored in love, strengthened by truth, and passed down through every generation she prayed over.
We give thanks knowing she has heard the words,
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
