Obituary

Girtha Mae Hunt- Ogbuneke was born in San Augustine, Texas to the parents of Robert Hunt Sr. and Ella (Barnes) Hunt. She was the seventh of ten children born to their union.

She attended schools in the San Augustine public schools, which included Lincoln High School and San Augustine High School. She graduated from San Augustine High School in 1973. Girtha left home in the summer of the same year to further her post high school education at Bishop College in Dallas, Texas. As an undergraduate, she majored in Social Studies and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1977. She furthered her studies at the University of Texas Permian Basis (Class of 2005).

Girtha began her classroom teaching in the Wilmer Hutchins Independent School District. She taught in Dallas I.S.D beginning in 1989 at W.T. White High School, where she taught American History and was the Spirit Club Sponsor and sponsor of the African American History Program. She extended a helping hand via assisting with many different tasks that involved students. She constantly challenged her students to strive for excellence. Her teaching career also included teaching at Sunset High School until she retired in 2008. During her teaching career, she earned multiple certificates, which included Public Administration and Education Administration. Her love for education and teaching led her to more than 30 years of teaching in the Dallas, Texas area.

Girtha joined St. Matthew Baptist Church during her childhood years, and after moving to Dallas, she united with Leath Street Baptist Church under the pastorage of Pastor Paul W. Brown. While at Leath Street Missionary Baptist Church, she served as President of the Mission.

She was a loving and devoted teacher, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend to all whose lives she touched.

On November 17, 1982, Girtha Mae Hunt married Callistus O. Ogbuneke in Dallas, Texas. To their union, one child was born, Emenike O. Ogbuneke.

Girtha was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Hunt Sr. and Ella Barnes Hunt; two brothers, Lonnie B. and Earlzene Hunt Sr.; three sisters, Verda Lee Hunt Davis, Luvene Hunt, and Lola Faye Hunt.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband of 38 years, Callistus O. Ogbuneke of Mesquite, Texas; one son, Emenike O. Ogbuneke of Mesquite, Texas; four siblings, Robert Hunt Jr. (Joyce) of Houston, Texas; Thetievee Murphy (Robert) of Houston, Texas; Marjorie Bluford (Acy) of Houston, Texas; Clo V. Hunt of Houston, Texas; one aunt, Emma Barnes Greer (Oliver) of Victoria, Texas; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
