Obituary

Today, we gather not only to remember, but to celebrate the remarkable life of George Bertram Wright—a beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend whose impact on our lives was as deep as it was joyful.

Born on September 17, 1954, to the late Horace and Elsie Wright (Sandling), George was the youngest of ten siblings—the cherished baby of the family. Family lore tells us that his middle name, Bertram, came from the doctor who delivered him, which only adds to the charm of his story.

Later in life, George also learned of his biological father Reginald J. Owens, Sr., who has preceded him in rest.

George grew up in Philadelphia, attending schools in the city's public system and graduating from Dobbins Technical High School in 1973. His life's work would be in printing, where he found his stride and built an impressive career. He became an expert pressman—his machine of choice, the Sakurai Printing Press—and was known throughout the industry for his skill, precision, and professionalism. Even after retiring in 2022, George's reputation carried on, and he continued consulting—doing what he loved, with people who respected his craft.

Though printing paid the bills, basketball was his true passion. If you asked George, he'd tell you he missed his true calling in the NBA. He played in local leagues in New Jersey, forming lifelong friendships and spinning tales that could fill volumes. When he moved to Dallas in 2010 with his beloved wife Sonya, he picked up where he left off, joining a league there and gaining a whole new circle of friends and fans.

Family was the heart of George's world. Known affectionately as "Pop Pop," he cherished every moment with his grandchildren—snapping photos, making memories, and proudly sharing it all on Facebook. His love for his family was visible in every smile, every visit, and every thoughtful gesture.

And let's not forget his second passion: shopping. George loved Macy's like it was a second home. He had an eye for quality and a heart for giving, always on the lookout for that perfect find. When asked what he was shopping for, he'd simply say, "I won't know until I see it." That spirit—spontaneous, generous, and full of joy—was pure George.

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, George peacefully transitioned from this life to the next, surrounded by love and lifted by faith.  George spoke often of his belief in Christ, and we rest in the blessed assurance that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."  He is now at peace and reunited with his parents, sisters Shirley, Sheila, Brenda, Gertrude and Claudia and brothers Robert, John and Reginald, Jr.

He leaves behind a legacy of love: his devoted wife, Sonya McHenry-Wright, his children: Keylan Wright (Sue), Kacy Wright (Heather), Cory Wright (Alia), Jason Wright (Nichole), Jasmine Wright and Brandon Morrison (Patrice). His many grandchildren: Tajie, Khalel, EJ, Eva, Kaleb, Logan, Elijah, Kanise, Kacy Jr, Kayla, Kamryn, Peyton, Ashan, Skylar, Jason Jr, Gianna, Landon and Mallyn will carry forward his warmth and laughter for generations to come.

He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings: Phyllis Willis, Horace "Sonny" Wright, Jr. (Lucille), James Wright, Daynor Owens (Barbara), Wayne Owens and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

George's life was full—of love, of laughter, of friendship, and unforgettable moments. As we celebrate him today, let us not dwell on the sadness of goodbye but instead rejoice in the gift of his presence. He lived with heart, humor, and deep connection—and we are all better for having known him.

A Celebration of Life will be held for George on Friday, August 15 at noon at Camden County Boathouse, 7050 North Park Drive, Pennsauken, NJ  08109, followed by reception.  Donations in his memory can be made to the National Cancer Society:  www.cancer.org/donate/memorial-giving.html.

Rest easy, George. You were one of a kind—and you are deeply, joyfully loved.
