Gene Ellis Johnson was born on December 24, 1946, to the proud parentage Nathaniel and Janie (Holmes) Johnson in Ferris, TX. He departed this earthly life on April 20, 2022, at home in Lancaster, TX. Gene was raised in Joppa, TX, and attended the Metropolitan AME Church under the pastorship of Rev. K.P. Harvey. Gene served in the church all his life and was a member of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX at the time of his death Gene graduated from John Kennedy High School in 1965. He had an honorable career of 37 years of service with the United States Postal Service, retiring on April 1, 2003. After retirement, Gene enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, bowling, golfing, and the art of doing nothing. In 1967, Gene was drafted into the United States Army and served as a Combat Infantryman until 1969 when he received an honorable discharge. His skill with rifles earned him the designation as Sharpshooter. During his tenure, he promoted to the rank of Sergeant and earned two awards of the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with a bronze service star. Gene married Glenda Johnson in 2006 in Dallas, Texas. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Janie and Nathaniel Johnson; siblings, Aaron, Lincoln, Johnny, Frances, and Jessie Ree Johnson; daughter; Michelle Arnett and sons; Gary Lee and Brandon Johnson. Gene leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife Glenda Johnson; sons, Jason Johnson (LaShonda White) and Chandler B. (Lana) Johnson; daughters, Phyllis Williams and Wendy (Bradley) Greene, Stephanie (Eddie) West; grandsons, Michael Arnette, Chandler E. Johnson, Xavier Johnson; granddaughters, Keiandra Arnett, Corinne Johnson, and Cadence Greene; and a host of extended family and friends.
