Obituary

Evelyn Marie Johnson Hurd passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026.

Evelyn was born on November 3, 1934, in Dallas, Texas, to Lola Mae Kizzee Johnson and Walter M. Johnson. After the untimely passing of her parents during her childhood, Evelyn was lovingly raised by her paternal grandparents, Middie and Tom Johnson, in Franklin, Texas, who played a significant role in shaping her life.

Evelyn graduated from Robertson County Schools in 1953. In 1957, relocated to Dallas, Texas and entered the workforce, where she would build both her career and her faith community.

In April 1976, Evelyn married Jerry Hurd. Their union was blessed for many years until Jerry's passing in July 1999.

Evelyn held various jobs throughout her lifetime, including waitressing at the Greyhound Bus Line and working as a clerk at a local pharmacy. However, she was most dedicated to her role as an Accounts Receivable Clerk with A-Able Auto Insurance Company, where she worked diligently for many years until her retirement in 2020.

As a faithful servant of God, Evelyn was a devoted member of Salem Institutional Baptist Church for over 50 years. During her tenure, she faithfully served as Church Clerk, a singer in the Nelson Echo choir, a member of the Usher Board, Sunday School and the Finance Team.

Evelyn had a deep love for writing and reciting poetry, often delivering well-versed resolutions to bereaved families. She also enjoyed fundraising for her church and attending various church services throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

She will be fondly remembered for her kind and inquisitive spirit, her love for God, her church, family gatherings particularly Thanksgiving, her enjoyment of working with numbers, and her enthusiastic devotion to watching the television game show Family Feud.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Hurd; her parents, Lola Mae and Walter Johnson, grandparents Middie and Tom Johnson, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and her two dear friends Beatrice Jones and Ima Jean Watson.

Left to cherish her memory are her two caregivers Brenda Kizzee and Michael Kizzee, a host of cousins and her beloved church family, with special affection for the Atkins family.
