Obituary

Emille Jo Betterson was born January 29th, 1944, the first of seven children of Frederick L. Ferrell Esq. and Mollie Jo Thomas-Ferrell RN in Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents' influence shaped her into the caring and meticulous matriarch, who would later raise mentors, comfort, and inspire those graced with her presence.

After graduating from Glenville H.S. in 1963, she married the love of her life, James Betterson, in 1966. She later attended Eastfield College with a concentration in Criminal Justice. Emille's life work focused on accounting and social services. She worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield, UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Diamond Shamrock - Maxxus Energy, Volunteers of America, and DISD. Emille volunteered with various organizations such as The African American Museum, Habitat for Humanity, and Antiques Roadshow. As the first President of the African American Interest Group of The Dallas Genealogical Society and a member for 30 years, she participated in radio segments to encourage others to study their lineage. Her passion for discovering her ancestry sparked the interest of her children, extended family, and friends.

Emille led a life of regality and influenced others to do the same. Under her watch, she ensured all involved in her life would live with conviction to excel beyond their ancestors' wildest dreams through education, work, or leisure activities. While raising her own three children, she and James welcomed and raised nieces Ranise Gillespie and Paris Meltzer-King. This warmhearted and selfless decision blossomed into an opportunity to help them grow into the successful women they were destined to become.

Spending quality time with family was paramount; she preferred to do so while globetrotting with her husband by her side. Emille and Jim traveled and embarked on over 30 cruises to several countries, with the most notable locations being the Caribbean islands, Canada, Paris, Ephesus, Egypt, Rome, Dubai, India, and Singapore.

Emille recreated her childhood memories by decorating her inherited dollhouse and enjoyed attending the annual American Dollhouse Convention. She was an avid and passionate shopper for high fashion. She frequented boutiques and couture shops, procuring only the best church attire and evening gowns that garnered many compliments. Her love of pottery, sewing, collecting African American dolls, and gardening kept her busy. She also enjoyed attending music concerts, live theatre, and opera, with a unique appreciation of the artistry of Porgy and Bess.

Survived by her husband of 54 years, James E. Betterson, and survived by children: Carmen D. Betterson-Collins, Efrem M. Betterson, and Lisa R. Betterson; Guardian of Nieces: Ranise B. Gillespie, and Paris S. Meltzer-King. Grandchildren: Charmaine D. Betterson, Jason R. Betterson, Jasmine D. Collins and Efrem M. Betterson Jr. Preceded in death by Parents Mollie and Frederick Ferrell, Sisters: Louise A. Franklin and Linda D. Ferrell. She is survived by Siblings: Sandra J. Woodall, Janis E. Rabb, Frederick L. Ferrell Jr., and Charles T. Ferrell.
