Elaine S.
Douglas
July 17, 1961 – November 26, 2023
Elaine Smith Douglas, affectionately known to her family and friends as Laine, entered this world on July 17, 1961, in Otero, New Mexico, born to L.D. and Sarah Ruth Smith. After a few years in New Mexico, her family moved to Dallas where Laine attended high school.
On June 24, 1978, Laine gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Demetrius Denise Smith. Despite the challenges she encountered as a young mother, Laine showed resilience and resourcefulness as she worked hard to create a home and a good life for her and her daughter.
Laine developed a passion for caregiving and pursued a nursing assistant certification at Gideon Nursing School in Dallas. This career choice allowed her to fulfill her desire to provide compassionate care to those in need.
Laine gave her life to God when she was young and found joy in attending church. In her later years, she became a member of Griggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas.
Pursing a new chapter in her life, Laine moved to Carrollton to be closer to her daughter, Demetrius, where she also continued her work as a nursing assistant.
Laine was known for her sense of humor and could be relied on to be the life of any party. She will be remembered for her dedication to caring for the elderly and her delicious Jamaican food. She also enjoyed being a grandmother and adored her grandson, Gibril.
In February of this year, Laine faced the diagnosis of small cell lung cancer. She showed incredible strength enduring weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, triumphing over cancer in May. Regrettably, in October, the illness returned, and Laine peacefully departed this life in November.
Laine was preceded in death by her parents and leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Demetrius D. Sands (Michael) of Carrollton; her grandson, Gibril Rambo; her siblings: Sylvester Smith (Dallas), Juanita Smith (Dallas), Leroy Smith (Venus Bell) of Dallas; and a host of loving nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends.
