Douglas Calvin
Mcbroom
August 5, 1944 – July 26, 2025
Douglas Calvin McBroom, affectionately known as "Mac," was born on August 5, 1944, in Durham, North Carolina. He was the seventh of eight sons born to the late Walker and Lucy McBroom. From a young age, Mac demonstrated a strong work ethic, inspired by his mother's perseverance and his father's teachings, which emphasized the importance of hard work and providing for loved ones. He proudly graduated from Central High School in Hillsboro, North Carolina.
A lifelong adventurer at heart, Mac's greatest dream was to see the world. In 1963, he seized that opportunity by joining the United States Air Force. His career took him to military bases across the United States and Far East Asia. During the height of the Vietnam War, Mac bravely completed two consecutive tours, returning home safely by the Lord's grace. After over twenty years of dedicated service, he retired from the military in September 1983 and transitioned seamlessly to serving the people of Maryland as a United States Postal Service Mail Handler. In 1984, Mac attended the wedding of the daughter (Gloria Lynn) of his lifelong time military buddy, Orvel Jackson and his wife Donna. At the reception, he reconnected with Verlie, Donna's sister, and they began to date. After a few years of courting, Mac proposed to the 'love of his life' and he and Verlie were married in 1988.
Driven by a lifelong dream of owning his own business and creating a legacy. Mac made the decision to retire from the postal service. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail. He skillfully combined his business acumen, his military civil engineering skills, and his talent as an artisan to establish his own entrepreneurial contracting enterprise in Prince George's County, Maryland. From the ground up, he built his business with the same diligence and integrity he was known for, earning recognition as an Excellent Business Owner by the state of Maryland. His innovative nature and love for backyard grilling motivated him to showcase his culinary talents by envisioning and building an outdoor grill that even corporate businesses took notice of. Throughout his journey, he remained rooted in his core value - taking care of his family. His steadfast motto was, "The work is not finished until the job is done right."
In the early 2000's, Mac and Verlie relocated to Red Oak, Texas, where his inventive spirit continued to thrive. He ventured into landscaping and planted every tree on his property. He became a trusted "Go-to Person" within the contracting community, especially during the construction of their home in Ferris, Texas. Anyone familiar with Mac knew how much he loved working on his property. With an eye for potential where others saw only land or grass, he envisioned a peaceful retreat. A true hands-on craftsman, using only a backhoe, tools, and true grit and vision, he transformed his land and dug a lake turning his backyard area into a serene fishing pond and adorning the space with a fishing pier and benches for family and friends to gather and enjoy the view.
Mac was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather uncle, brother, brother-in-law, and cherished friend. Mac's father Walker, mother, Lucy, and seven brothers, William, Thomas, Otis, Forest, Russell, Walter, and Ray McBroom proceeded him in death.
Mac leaves behind to cherish his memory and mourn his passing: his devoted wife, Verlie McBroom of Ferris, Texas; daughter Joy McBroom Smith (James) of Fairfield, Ohio; stepson James Henry (Tokuko) of Osaka, Japan; grandchildren, Natalie, Jayden, Jordan, Alexandra, and Jolie; brothers-in-law Don Cambric of Chicago, Illinois, Virgil Cambric (Valencia) of Markham, Illinois; Edward Wheeler (Ranier) of West Toluca, California; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth McBroom of Durham, North Carolina; Donna Jackson of Hampton, Virginia; Gloria Thomas of Country Club Hills, Illinois; Lorraine Brown of Calumet City, Illinois; Linda Cambric of Holland, Michigan; and Valerie Cambric of Schererville, Indiana, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.
