Obituary

Dorothy Brown Scott was born October 25, 1927 in Mesquite, Texas as one of seven children to the late Christopher C. Collins and Beatrice Miles Collins.

She confessed Christ at a young age of 13 and was educated in the Mesquite Independent School District. Shortly after, Dorothy was united in matrimony to James D. Brown, Sr. To this union, eight children were born. She later married Theophilus Scott.

As a devout Christian, she introduced her children to Christ and led a life that exemplified her love for the Lord. This faith legacy continues throughout her family and was apparent to all who knew her.

Upon arrival to Dallas, Texas in 1955, she became a member of the Bexar Street Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late R.L. Robinson. In 1969, Dorothy joined Griggs Chapel Baptist Church where Pastors Homer D. Webb, Sr. and Earnest Wilson led the congregation. She served in many capacities: Mission President, Sunday School Teacher, Vice President of Gospel Choir and member of Senior Choir where she shared her anointed voice until her health declined.

Just as faithful as she was to the Lord, Dorothy led a life committed to her family. She loved to cook and bake where she was known for her famous tea cakes. Her desire to sing for the Lord was endless. During her work history, she worked as a domestic, a beautician, a baker and in her later years as a volunteer at Parkland Hospital as a Foster Grandparent until she retired.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, siblings, two daughters: Gurtha Jackson and Mary Phillips, and one grandson: Rodney Brown. Dorothy is survived by her sons, James Brown, Jr. (Earlene), Manuel Brown (Lena), Charles Brown; daughters, Doris Jeffery (Joe), Deborah McMillan (Noel) and Shirley Gates (Jerry); fifteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
