Doris Jean McMillan was born in Dallas, Texas, on September 1, 1941. As the youngest of four children, she was raised in a loving, close-knit family that helped shape the generous and caring spirit she carried throughout her life.
Doris attended Southern Crest Baptist Church and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas, Texas. With a passion for beauty and an even deeper desire to serve others, she pursued cosmetology school. Her determination and undeniable talent soon led her to open her own hair salon, where she built lasting relationships with clients and friends throughout her community.
Her boundless love for others naturally drew her into caregiving, where she nurtured children as if they were her own, showering them with tenderness, patience, and unwavering devotion. Through this work she touched many lives, but she shared an especially deep and unbreakable bond with Colin and Amara Durham and their children, Jackson (Kate) and Zoe Durham (Geoff). Over the years they became like family to her, and she cherished the love and connection they shared.
Doris had a heart for people and expressed her love through her generosity and hospitality. Time spent with her was always a gift—whether gathered around a lively card game or savoring one of her legendary pecan or sweet potato pies, each slice tasting like heaven baked with love. She had a special way of bringing people together, filling her home with laughter, good food, and joyful celebrations that created memories to last a lifetime.
Doris was preceded in death by her mother, Winell Bradford; her sister, Mary Kinney; and her brother, Charles McDonald. The deepest sorrow any great-grandmother could bear came with the heartbreaking losses of Derrick Abrams and Jaden McMillan—wounds her tender heart carried with quiet grace.
Yet even through grief, Doris led with radiant love and profound gratitude. She treasured every moment spent with family, from heartfelt conversations and loving visits to the warmth of holiday gatherings that brought everyone together.
She leaves behind to forever cherish her memory her son, Derrick McMillan; her grandchildren, Brittany Abrams, Denarrion McMillan, and Brian Jackson; and her great-grandchildren, Denarrion McMillan Jr., D'Kaylnn McMillan, and Vermeare McMillan. Her family's love for her was as steadfast as hers for them. She is also remembered with deep affection by her niece, Shawndra Allen (Lee); nephews, Gary Kinney Sr. and Gary Kinney Jr. (Fatimah); along with a wide circle of extended family members and dear friends whose lives she brightened endlessly.
Doris will be deeply missed, but her legacy of generosity, her smile, and her love will forever live in our hearts.
"Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord."
