Delores Harriet
Wesley
March 4, 1928 – April 13, 2024
Delores Harriet Calloway-Wesley was born to Sam Anderson and Daisy Rushing in Gisbland, Louisiana, on March 4, 1928. At an early age, Delores moved to Dallas, Texas, where she attended school in the Dallas Independent School District and graduated from Lincoln High School.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor B.F. Briggs.
In her early years, Delores met and married William H. Thompson, Jr., who preceded her in death. From that union, three children were born; Patricia Ann Thompson, William H. Thompson III, and Ross D. Thompson.
Delores or "Bamma" as she was called, had a gift of caring for people, leading her to pursue a nursing career. While serving in nursing, she worked at both St. Paul and Parkland Hospital. During her tenure at St. Paul, she was one of many black nurses who assisted with transitioning the first patients from the old Parkland to the new St. Paul Hospital. She was among the first African American nurses to work with Dr. Emmett J. Conrad and Dr. William Larkin. While working at St. Paul, she met and later married the late John Calloway. Together with her children, they raised Rita Calloway Mosley and two other siblings.
After 30-plus years in the nursing field, Delores retired and became employed with DISD, where she became a Substitute Teacher. She was also involved in many civic and community organizations, working in multiple positions doing charitable work. She was known for her fashionable hats that she wore each day.
Delores and John joined Carver Heights Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and she was a deaconess. It was there in the early 1960's that she met Bettie Jean Smith, who became her best friend of many years and adopted daughter. Together they organized the Nursing Guild Ministry where they served faithfully.
Delores Calloway became a charter member of Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist in 1986, under the leadership of Dr. Karry D. Wesley, whom she loved dearly. She volunteered in the Nursery and was a member of the Mother's Board.
On April 27, 1996, Delores married Henry Lee Wesley, Sr. and moved to Camden, Arkansas. When his health began to fail, they returned to Texas and lived with Karry, Cheryl, and the boys. She remained a faithful and loving wife to Henry until his passing in 2005.
Delores continued to be an active member of her church and community, helping others whenever she could. She loved people, and people loved her. On Saturday, April 13, 2024, God called Delores Wesley home.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, daughter, and husband, Henry L. Wesley, Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory: William H. Thompson III (Faye), Ross Thompson (Barbara), and Torina Johnson; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; two goddaughters (Andris and Jackie); nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives, friends and so many who loved her dearly. Special recognition goes to Ms. Mattie Colson, Ms. Nancy Brooks, Ms. Donna Aldridge, Ms. Debbie Brown, Faye Thompson, Barbara Thompson, and Ms. Maggie Hansbrough.
