Deacon Vernon
Thomas Jordan
July 4, 1937 – December 3, 2021
Vernon Thomas Jordan, 84, was born to the parentage of the late Sally Mae Clay and Felton P. Jordan on July 4, 1937, in Conroe, Texas. He was the oldest of two children. Vernon gained his heavenly wings on Friday, December 3, 2021. Vernon attended school in the Dallas Independent School District and was a proud graduate of James Madison High School in 1958. On April 25, 1959, Vernon married the love of his life, Jowanda Elaine Jackson at Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church. To this union were born two children, one son, Russell and one daughter, Crystal.
He was a faithful member of Greater Bethlehem where he began serving as a Deacon. The two were married for 58 years before Jowanda earned her wings in 2017. Vernon joined Friendship-West Baptist Church in 1991 and was a faithful member until his death. While serving as a Deacon, he also worked in various ministries: Disciples In On-going Preparation (DIOP), Operation Brothers Loving/Leading African American Church and Community (OBLACC), J. C. Holmes Male Chorus, First Friends and The ARJ Seniors Ministry. In his lifetime Vernon worked several jobs. He owned a record shop in South Dallas, distributed papers for the Dallas Times Herald, was a baggage handler at Continental Airlines, and founded, owned and operated VeeJay's Trucking Company.
With an emince love for soul food, cars, trucks, botany, stewardship, friendship, and all things black culture, Vernon's impact in and around his community will be felt for generations to come. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, only brother, Preston Jordan, and loving wife Jowanda. He leaves to cherish his legacy of memories: two children: Russell T. Jordan and Crystal D. Jordan, one grandson Thomas F. Jordan, nieces Virginia Jackson and Keisha Jordan, and a host of other family members and friends.
