Clarissa Elaine DeVaughn was born July 5, 1929, in Rosebud, Texas to Ethel and Arthur James Mooring, Sr. She was the youngest of nine children. Clarissa had accepted Christ at a young age and was a member of Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She attended Lincoln High School and was a member of the famous Purple Flash. After high school she attended Bishop College in Marshall, Texas and received her Bachelors of Science in Education. At Bishop College, she met and married the love of her life, A.T. DeVaughn on July 23, 1951. From their sacred and loving union 5 children were born: Janice (James) Goines, Karen (William) Cosey, Dennis (Maureen) DeVaughn and Artis DeVaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband A.T. and daughter Kathy Mullins.
Clarissa and her family journeyed to Dallas in 1973 and united with Memorial Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Gerald Britt, Sr. As she matured, she later united with Loving Fellowship Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Michael D. Sneed, where she served until illness set and remained a faithful member until her death.
Clarissa DeVaughn was most affectionately known as Mother, Mother DeVaughn and Granny. She was an outstanding Christian, wife, mother, aunt, sister and friend and will be remembered for the love and laughter she shared with everyone. In addition to those listed above she is survived and remembered by 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. To her children, she gave life, demonstrated a Christian walk and aged with grace and dignity.
