On February 21, 1943, Cherry Faye Pouncy Sheppard became one of six children born to Viola and Tommie Lee Pouncy of Grapeland Texas.
Humble, soft-spoken, and intelligent best describes Cherry who was the fourth youngest sibling out of four boys and two girls born to the Pouncys of East Texas, one of the oldest African American families in the state with a lineage that pre-date the American Civil War to Colonial Carolinas. Cherry moved to Dallas with her parents in 1952.
A skilled musician (flutist), and lover of classical music, Cherry quickly earned a reputation during her teen years as one of the best talents at Lincoln High School in the early 1960s. Additionally she was known as a responsible, dependable individual who understood the importance of education and having a positive work ethic. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1961 she acquired her first significant employment at an upscale North Dallas dress shop along with her big sister Eliza. Cherry was determined to earn funds for college without being a burden on her now single parent mother. Her dad passed away in 1964. Cherry eventually attended Bishop College in Dallas, Texas got married and produced three wonderful daughters.
Cherry had a compassionate, angelic soul and a sharp intellect. She worked 25-years as a commercial accountant followed by an addoitional 10-years in the home health care industry until retirement in 2010. However, she always had time for her daughters, aging mother and extended family. She rarely complained and her moral and spiritual demeanor was an inspiration to us all.
Cherry Faye put on Christ at an early age and had been a dedicated member of the Lawrence & Marder St., Church of Christ for over 40-years. She was proceeded in death by her parents and two brothers, George in 2007 and John in 2008. Those remaining to cherish her loving memories include her daughters, Karan Johnson (Shannon), Valencia Dexter (Carl) and Erreka Sheppard all of Dallas, Texas. Additionally Cherry is survived by her sister Eliza Wilson and twin brothers Gene and Joe Pouncy of Dallas, Texas. She was blessed to have eight grandchildren, six great-grand children as well as many relatives and freinds throughout the world.
Cherry Faye Pouncy Sheppard passed away on November 22, 2017 after a short illness. She loved her family; cared for others; loved Christ and by doing so she made her life more beautiful daily.
