Bettye Rose
Horace
August 13, 1937 – October 2, 2025
Bettye Lois Rose Horace was born August 13, 1937, in Karnack, Texas. She transitioned to eternal rest with her Lord on October 2, 2025.
Our beloved Bettye Lois Rose Horace, affectionately known as "Bettye with an E," was born to the parentage of the late Walter Rose and Ada Williams Rose. She received her formal education in Karnack, Texas, at George Washington Carver High School with the graduating class of 1956. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Wiley College in 1961 (now known as Wiley University). Bettye was employed by the Dallas Independent School District for 54 years. During her time with the district, she served as a Language Arts teacher, Art teacher and Teacher Technologist, training teachers and students on computer programs. After her second retirement, she continued to work with Dallas' Alternative Education program to mentor new teachers.
Growing up in East, Texas, Bettye accepted Christ at an early age at James Chapel Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas. Bettye later met and married her high school sweetheart, Ray Horace. To this union, three daughters were born: Katrina, Tamme and Jan. They became devoted members of Concord Church after joining 48 years ago in March of 1977. She served in many roles at the church: Hospitality/Greeter, Medical Ministry, and volunteered many years at the Polk Street location creating and covering the hallways with bulletin boards to keep members abreast of the happenings around church.
In the community, Bettye was a member and president of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Minnie H. Goodlow Page Section in the Dallas area. Bettye also was involved in her neighborhood association. She served along side her husband and continued as president after his death, totaling 25 years. Wherever there was a need, she created an opportunity. She organized a Girl Scout Troop for the young ladies in her neighborhood. She was most proud of her family, career in education, and inspiring young people to be their best and excel.
Bettye was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 42 years, Ray Horace; granddaughter, Taylor Iman Gaddis; brothers, Ernest Rose and Odell Rose; and sister, Othene Haggerty.
Those left to cherish precious memories include her children: Katrina Long (Anthony), Tamme Gaddis (Aaron), and Jan Hall (Tony); grandchildren: Antoine Long, Anthonia Washington (Bryan), Erin Gaddis, Alexis Tucker, and Kendell Long; great-grandchildren: Christopher, Bryson, Brylan, Abryelle, Bryen, Bryden, Brymere, and Micah; brothers: Willie Rose and James Rose (Cheryl); sisters: Vernell Collier and Dr. Myrtle Rose; and a host of other relatives, godchildren, and cherished friends.
