Obituary

Ms. Betty Joyce Johnson was born in Houston, Texas on July 29, 1945 to the parents of Andrew Johnson and Gertie Stubblefield.

She answered the Master's call on April 19, 2022.

She accepted Christ at a young age attending 1 st Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She attended grammar school at Bruce Elementary and graduated from Phyllis Wheatley in 1964.

Upon graduating she married Jay Burley and to this union was born one son, John Burley. She later moved to California and gave birth to a second son, Roderic Hines.

After several years she relocated to Texas. Upon arrival she took employment with several companies. She soon realized that she had a calling as a pastry chef.

She continued her education with the Wilton School of Decoraty & Confectionaly Art. Realizing that baking was her future she set her sights on the State Fair of Texas. She knew that winning as many competitions as possible would lead to notarity and sponsorships. After years of entering contest, she focused her attention on serving the community by creating "Going Bananas Booth" at the fait. Joyce was a multiple "Best of Show" winner and top achievement in many categories.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother, Vania Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, John Fitzgerald Burley and Roderic Burton Hines; six grandchildren, Jarrett Burley, Tytianna Hines, Tyler Burley, McKenzie Hines, Londyn Hines and Princeton Hines; four sisters, Bobbie Davis, Annette Johnson, Gloria Crockett and Ernestine Sapp; one brother, Howard Blunt, Jr. (Denise); along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
