Obituary

ALTON NEIL GREEN was a devout and zealous man of God who dedicated his life to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and helping his fellowman. His favorite songs, "Jesus is Love" by The Commodores and "Say Amen" by Howard Hewett reflect a life of gratefulness to the God of His salvation.

Born October 8, 1953, to the parentage of Lola Dedmon and Charlie Young, Alton was the baby boy of 6 children. He was blessed with loving Christian parents who taught him to love God first, serve others and do good to all mankind. A native of New Boston, Alton accepted Christ as his Personal Savior at the age of twelve at Arkadelphia Baptist Church. He matriculated in the New Boston School District, a 1972 graduate of New Boston High School.

Post-graduation, Alton pursued training in the field of Computer Programmer Technology at El Centro College in Dallas. In 1975, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country in the 4th Infantry Division until 1979. He was a proud Veteran earning a Specialist 4 rank and received an honorable discharge. His employment record spans almost 30 years of positions held at Lighthouse for the Blind, the U.S. Postal Service and Veterans Hospital. In 2001, he retired as a Printer from the Zales Corporation.

On November 16, 1974, Alton Neil Green and Shelia Kay Henderson were united in Holy Matrimony. God blessed this union with four children who they affectionately called Lo (LoEartha), Kizzy (Libra), Lynn (Alton) and Hoppy (Torrance). The Green family united with the Mount Moriah Church family in 1987 and worked as a family unit distributing goods from the church food pantry. Brother Green was an active participant on God's program and was among the list of 2018 All Saints Day honorees. A humble and submissive spirit, Bro. Green served as a member of the Brotherhood and Trustee Ministry with a sincere smile. He displayed a quiet wisdom but never shied away from an opportunity to share his "philosophy" with the younger generation. Striking up a conversation with him, you were sure to hear about the love of Jesus Christ and how thankful he was for the free gift of salvation.

Affectionally known to his family as "Grease" and "Doc", Alton was an example of love in action. Often found reading his Bible and listening to music, his love for his family and his fellowman kept him on the go. He loved the outdoors, enjoyed taking walks and never met a stranger. An avid Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks fan, he was known to "supervise" in the kitchen before watching games. By his own recount, he was "a jack of all trades and master of none." Other favorite pastimes included fishing, collecting old records, and watching Westerns. Alton leaves a legacy of faith and hope in Jesus Christ, hard work and resiliency in the face of adversity. A person who provided exemplary efforts in helping mankind, he had a firm handshake and an unassuming and disarming smile that could put anyone at ease. From young to old, his compassion and character left an indelible imprint on the hearts and lives of many and will long be remembered.

Alton Green was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Shelia Green; his parents; sisters, Christine Dedmon, Ruthie Lee Dedmon, Ida Dedmon, Jewel Fisher and brother, Melvin Dedmon.
