Obituary

A.D. Whitfield, Jr. was born in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, on September 2, 1943, to the union of A.D. Whitfield and Theresa Mae Williams Whitfield. He was the first of two children reared in a loving, Christian home. At an early age, A.D. learned the lessons of respect, tradition, and responsibility. He attended the Shiloh Baptist Church and Manasseh Church of God in Christ with his maternal and paternal families.

A.D. Whitfield, Jr. was a 1961 graduate of Wilson White High School. He was a marching band member and joined the football team during his second year in high school. Trained by his revered coach, Henry Lee Williams, A.D. was named to the all-district football team where he played halfback and fullback.

After high school, A.D. committed to an athletic scholarship at North Texas State University, where he majored in kinesiology and was a halfback on the football team for four years. His mentor, Coach Fred McCain, was instrumental in honing his skills as an offensive player . In the Missouri Valley Conference, A.D. earned Honorable Mention All-American and All-Conference in his sophomore and jun ior years.

In 1965, A.D. was signed as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys Football Team, but in 1966, he was traded to the Washington Redskins organization where he would spend the next three years. His best game was against the New York Giants on November 27, 1966, when the Redskins and Giants set the NFL record for the most combined points (113) in a game. A.D. scored three touchdowns, two by rushing and one by a reception.

In 1970, A.D. joined the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League where he played for another three years before joining the Florida Blazers franchise in the World Football League where the legendary Jack Pardee coached him. During this time, A.D. resided with his family in Prince Georges County, Maryland, and during the off-season worked in marketing and merchandising for Pepsi Cola. He retired from football in 1975.

In the fall of 1975, A.D. and his fa mily relocated from District Heights, Maryland to Dallas, Texas. It was here that he began a phenomenal career that would last for more than four decades . He became a financial professional and insurance agent for New York Life Insurance Company, assisting hundreds of families with plans to grow their wealth and prepare for retirement. He served each client by providing guidance and support in protecting their finances, futures, and loved ones. Over the years, honors and awards presented to A.D. were numerous. Most noteworthy is that he earned a place at the Million Dollar Round Tabl e (MDRT) for over forty years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a loving nephew, Alpha Conteh , and precious niece Theresa Conteh .

Joining in the loss of A. D. Whitfield, Jr , is a daughter, April Whitfield, a son , Sedric Walker, a sister, Betty Conteh (Alpha), a niece, Isata Conteh , a n aunt, Charlie Mae Horton, three uncles, Artis Whitfield, Judge Whitfield IV, and Robert Whitfield, a goddaughter, Sondra Drummond, two devoted cousins, Thomas McCullough and Tyrone Whitfield, and a host of cousins and long-time friends.

Special thanks to his nurse, Fina Bowie , and long-time caregivers, Alma Dukes and Mamie Bradley, who did everything possible to help A.D. maintain a professional business and active personal life.
